Everyone wants to change something in their lives. Perhaps you would like to lose a few pounds or many pounds. Perhaps you would like to quit smoking once and for all. Who couldn't benefit from a bit more confidence?
Most people who have tried to achieve change through sheer “will power" only to go through a lot of tough work and eventually experience failure. We humans are very persistent so we try over and over again expecting a different outcome. When we employ "will power" to change, that willpower is challenged over and over until the mentally energy necessary to summon our willpower is depleted. We wind up right where we started and that much the worse for the wear. The reason "willpower" fails is because "willpower" requires an intense burst of mental energy that is impossible to maintain.
Not many people are aware that their mind functions on different levels. The model of the mind most commonly used in hypnosis is the model of the conscious and the subconscious mind. The conscious part of the mind is the part that deals with the here and now. It is critical and analytically. You might think of the conscious part of the mind as that little voice in your head that scolds you when you make a mistake or decides when and how to do things. This part of the mind retains around 8-10 bits of information at any given time. The information that the conscious part of the mind relays is not always accurate. This information is tainted by your perceptions. This is the part of your mind that you are consciously aware of. One of the functions of the conscious part of the mind is your willpower. How is your? Mine is like the wind…sometimes strong and other times it’s just not there.
There is a part of your mind that is at work that you are not consciously aware of and this is your subconscious part of your mind. The subconscious part of the mind is the part the part that keeps you doing the same thing over and over again. It is habitual. It allows you to react automatically without weighing all the processes necessary to perform an everyday action. It's storage capacity is unlimited. Your subconscious mind has been programmed from early childhood to the present day by all that you have experienced. All of your behaviors, feelings and habits both good and bad are controlled by our subconscious mind. Its prime directive is to keep you safe and happy.
Hypnosis is a tool by which communication is made with the subconscious part of the mind that enables accelerated change in a person’s life. During hypnosis the body and the conscious part of the mind are in a relaxed neutral state while the subconscious part of the mind remains awake, focused and is highly receptive to suggestions.
